New Solo Game - First Character - The Coming of Gomus Jo

This is going to be the chronicle of a solo game. I want to rely a lot on random content - like these random names that were generated by an Excel spreadsheet - (extra letters supplied as needed)

Karkeq Yafkeb - Telemdaw Wemumox - Hovlab Macabos

And here are some older names from a previous run of the same spreadsheet:

Kyvex Xan - Mezcog Wowfoy - Ukacta Lexeg - Donpaj Qylum (I like Donpaj as a title for a regional governor)

As far as rules, I think I'll use a hodgepodge of Advanced Labyrinth Lord, saving throws from Swords & Wizardry, magic rules from Holmes/Blueholme, my own Skill system from DD, (and whatever else I think of on the fly) noting them down as I go and collecting them together for later reference.

Today's Task: Make one character:

I roll 3d6 down the linewith standardized bonuses:

  Score     Modifier

    3       -3

   4,5      -2

  6,7,8     -1

9,10,11,12  +0

13,14,15    +1

 16,17      +2

   18       +3

   19       +4

   20       +5

I roll:

Strength 11
Intelligence 16
Dexterity 9
Wisdom 10
Constitution 6
Charisma 13

I'm allowing one swap- but I decide to leave them alone and go with the dice-suggested magic-user.

I roll for hp 1d4 = 1  (My house rule gives every starting character +2 for h.p. with a minimum of 3 even after the CON penalty I would otherwise take - I will take the penalty on successive levels with a minimum hp of 1 - or maybe I'll use the old-school reroll all dice and take the higher - I don't have to decide that yet.)

My roll of 1d4 = 1 + 2 = 3 HP.

For random name generation, I'm going to turn to Holmes Ref 2.0
I roll a 79 = 3 syllables. First syllable: 1, 69 = Go. Second syllable: 5, 19 = Mus (hmm, not sure I like where this is going). Third syllable: 3, 86 = Jo. Title: 75 = the Verbose.

Resulting in: Gomus Jo, the Verbose. (Oh well, I'm letting the dice decide - maybe it will grow on me?)

For gender I'll roll 1-3 = m, 4-6 = f. Maybe I should be less binary? I'll revisit that later.

I roll a 1 = male.

For Species/Anscestry I want to end up with mostly (50%?) humans with other races for variety. I may adjust it later.

ancestry - percentile roll:

01-50 human

51-64 dwarf
65-74 elf
75-84 halfling

85-89 goblin
90-96 half orc
97-98 ratling
     99 kamé (turtle folk)
00 grymalkin / nekko (cat folk)

I roll a 23 = human.

Human house rules: I want to do away with level limits for demi-humans since they are more of a game-construct than anything arising from the fiction so instead I'm going to give a few boons to humans to make up for the bonuses demi-humans get. First, they get a +1 they can add to any stat reflecting that humans are more varied/adaptable than the demi-humans. Second, to model that they are fast-learners, instead of level-limiting the other ancestries, I'm going to allow humans to double incoming XP. Now, that sounds crazy until you look over the class-level charts and realize that all it does is make the humans about 1 level higher than anyone elsefrom 2nd level on.

As I check through my stat-rolls I see that the +1 to any stat I have will not raise the modifier.  I'm going to add the +1 to CON in hopes of raising it in the future (I'm going to have rules to do that during levelling).

For spells, I want all magic-users to have Read Magic and then additional spells - I thought I wanted to use Holmes, but then I read it and I don't like the bit about the magic books being per level and containing all the spells - like the book of first level spells, then the book of second level spells, etc.

So here's what I think. I'm going to use the bit in Labyrinth Lore Corebook where it says "The player may choose two first level spells and one second level spell" except I'm going to require rolling randomly so that there will be other spells in use besides magic missile and sleep. Maybe I'll let players choose one of the spells when it's not just solo play. In addition all mages will have read magic - like it's a pre-req at the magic academy or whatever before learning anything else.

I roll a 7 and a 1 for first level spells - that's protection from evil and charm person.

For the second level spell, I roll a 10 - that's mirror image.

I'm using a house rule from Disoriented Ranger that states starting gold = 10 x Charisma score rather than another random 3d6 roll. This attempts to make Charisma less of a dump stat for people.

I finish up by buying equipment for good old Gomus.

Junk & random thoughts:

Which random name generator did I use before?  DCC back of book?  DICE.ods?  D30 books?  Holmes Ref 2.0?  One of the names included the sobriquet  "chaosbreaker":

Fitgrekara Orefeet      F Dwarf
Lorsook Chaosbreaker    M Dwarf
Branendi                F Cleric
Gaithig the Peculiar    F M-U

The roster I used from an earlier solo game shows that Lorsook had battle damage of: scarred l. arm, 3 fingers on r. hand missing, then - DOWN! so I must have been using some hit location chart from before - maybe my own from VP?

As far as random names go, Gaithig the Peculiar is right out of Holmes Ref 2.0 but there's no "chaosbreaker" so I must have used a combination of different methods. The other ones I mentioned didn't check out, so must have been some online one.

Maybe some of these will appear in this chronicle ...

Who or what is Karkeq Yafkeb? A strange sage that may or may not appear in the chronicle.
